Art Madrid'24 – Carmen Selma

Carmen Selma

Valencia, 1980

For the painter Carmen Selma, memory is one of the fundamental pillars of her work. She feels a special interest in discovering the past, immersing herself in it to try to understand the present. Her referents are old photographs from which she intuits or imagines the stories of those photographed, drawing upon their expressions and their gestures, contained in emotions or experiences which are told silently. Oil painting allows her to use a technique from the past from a contemporary perspective. In this sense, her work presents itself as a lure, in an attempt to call for deeper observation and reflection in a context where vertiginous immediacy seems to intend to subdue everything.
