Damián Ramis

Palma, 1954

Dona is the culmination of a challenge that has been slowly maturing in the evolutionary process of my sculptural work, with the female body as a pretext. It has not been an easy journey, although, in spite of everything, one feels intimately united to these sculptures of complex simplicity and sensual drawing, which ask to be caressed. Balzac said that the body has memory, and that memory, that essence, is the vital core of my work. In my search for it, I have stripped the body of all anecdote, to the point of taking the subtle drawing of a hip to the limit. Perhaps, deep down, my most intimate desire is to transcend matter, so that the body frees itself from its anatomical objectivity and becomes line and poem... and memory.
