Art Madrid'26 – Sebastian Gumpinger

Sebastian Gumpinger
Hannover, 1977
Sebastian Gumpinger was born in 1977 in Hanover (Germany) and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he completed a master’s degree in the class of Günther Förg. He has been exhibiting since 2013 and currently divides his time between Munich and Mallorca.
For Gumpinger, the line is the point of departure for his work. It is not merely a static element but a dynamic force that establishes a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. He creates his wall sculptures entirely by hand. Using angle grinders, he traces gestural and rhythmic marks on polished steel and copper surfaces. Although the plates are thin—often only 2 mm—they acquire an almost sculptural presence and generate a three-dimensional effect thanks to the play of light and shadow on the material. Light acts as an active component: as the viewer moves, the surface shifts, creating a visual experience in constant transformation.
