Art Madrid'26 – Thomas Trum

Thomas Trum
Rosmalen (Países Bajos), 1989
Thomas Trum (1989) explores abstraction through painting. He works within a self-imposed restrictive framework that focuses exclusively on line and color, spanning a wide range of scales—from paper to building façades.Research into materials, techniques, and spatial composition lies at the core of his practice. He often creates his works on a large scale and develops unconventional tools, such as giant markers and rotating spray machines. Fascinated by large-scale vehicles, Trum experiments to discover new ways of creating images. The extensive preparation contrasts with the execution of the final work, which sometimes takes only a few minutes.
His work is an interaction between the human body and the tool—almost a choreography aimed at applying the line to the surface in the most effective way. His pieces convey physicality and movement captured in color. He uses the studio as a place of continuous learning, seeking a recognizable, colorful, and abstract visual language. Among his most notable solo exhibitions are The Hole Gallery in Los Angeles and New York, Base-Alpha Gallery, the Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, and Kunsthal Rotterdam, where he reaffirmed his large-scale experimental approach. His presence at major fairs—including PAN Amsterdam, Art Rotterdam, Art Cologne, Enter Art Fair Copenhagen, Design Basel and Design Miami/Basel—consolidates his position in the international art and design circuits.
