Jürgen Paas, born in Krefeld (GER) in 1958, studied at the Hochschule Essen from 1981 to 1987 and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from 1991 to 1992. Scholarships and teaching assignments at various universities followed. Jürgen Paas lives and works in Essen and is established on the art market throughout Germany. Due to the interplay of chance and systematics, the works of Jürgen Paas seem like a material painting. The artist creates orders - with coloured plates, papers and PVC tapes, sorted by colour or in colourful sequence, grouped into 'Targets', 'Jukeboxes' and 'Popplanets'. In order to recognize the creative finesse with which Paas designs squares, rectangles and circles, the viewer must walk along the three-dimensional wall objects. Only in this way can the surface structures, colour changes, and materials be experienced. Paas's works evoke an optimistic drive as well as meditative calm.
