about Daniela Águila
La Habana, Cuba, 1999
This series of “Invisible Portraits”, in addition to representing a shift in my discourse, marks a milestone in my production. Without distancing myself from the pop visuality that characterizes my work, I explore for the first time the representation of Africanness embodied in the bodies of Black women. These women, with a sovereign presence, seem to whisper enigmatic stories. In them, I have conveyed an invitation to listen to the murmur of mixed, isolated, subaltern voices. With this proposal, I map out the path of what could become a new creative stage in which I have been able to immerse myself and construct another visual narrative. In this series, my committed practice not only encourages reflection on the many faces of identity, but also continues that disruptive dialogue from my own perspective.
