about Manuel Barreiro“Paparolo”

O Grove, Pontevedra, 1951

Manuel Barreiro Barreiro (O Grove, 1951), also known as Paparolo, is a sculptor, ceramicist and luthier. After earning a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Santiago de Compostela, he trained in modelling at the local School of Arts and Crafts, where he also taught. His collaboration with Isaac Díaz Pardo and Xosé Vizoso led him to participate in the initiatives of the Sargadelos Ceramic Studies Seminar, deepening his engagement with ceramics and complementing this with training in La Bisbal. Based in Santiago, he began his career as a muralist and later as a sculptor, taking part in the first contemporary ceramics exhibition ever held in Galicia (Casa da Parra, 1987). He exhibited widely in public institutions and private galleries and created works for public buildings. Advocating for clay as a sculptural medium, he developed his own technique and a body of work focused on the idea of (re)generation and material transformation. His practice evolved from murals to volume, navigating between abstraction and figuration, and in recent years he has returned to a more ceramic approach, experimenting with high-temperature glazes and the notion of “calculated improvisation.”
