about Nacho Angulo

Madrid, 1952

He began painting with Martín Saéz and later studied for three years at the School of Architecture in Madrid. In 1974 he founded the magazine Arp and travelled through Europe and South America. Angulo worked with wood from the immediacy of its natural values, textures and tonalities, recovering the experimental character of the avant-garde of the early twentieth century. The use of wood stems from the physical need, in the manner of the Cubists and Constructivists, to obtain a real differentiation of the conjugated planes on the surface of the pictorial composition. However, the model followed by this painter is closer to the informalism of Lucio Muñoz, where there is a particular synthesis between the accidental and the geometric. . Sometimes, introducing the surrealist methodology, he incorporates objects obtained through rectified chance, adding pigments to the glue that he applies to the wooden planks, nuancing the resulting surfaces. Although the meter and rhythm of the composition is determined by the pieces in the form of a puzzle or grid, what makes up the lyrical substance of the work is the sum of accidents on the surface of the plates; A sophisticated weave of tonal contrasts of light and shadow. Highlight his solo exhibitions at the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes de Santander (1986), the Jorge Kreisler Gallery (1989) and the Almirante Gallery (2001) in Madrid. In recent years he has been a benchmark in ArtMadrid with the Espiral Gallery.
