about Perrilla

A Coruña, 1989

Galician pop-surrealist painter born in A Coruña in 1981 and self-taught, she studied Graphic Arts at IES Calvo Sotelo and Illustration at the Pablo Picasso School of Arts. Her work, rich in detail and painted in oil on wood, explores the idea of the Mirror Universe—a boundless fantasy world where any adventure is possible. A lifelong animal lover, Perrilla conveys a message of respect, conservation, and protection of nature through pieces largely starring childlike female figures with large eyes, evoking a return to the magic of childhood. Complementing her paintings is her sculptural work in felted wool, where the imagined pets that often accompany her protagonists take on volumetric form. These creatures add a discordant note and a sense of strangeness and familiarity for the viewer, placing her work closer to surrealism than to a simple idealization of her characters.

Her exhibition career spans Spain, Portugal, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with numerous solo and group shows. It also includes the illustration of children’s books, posters, and workshops related to comics and illustration within the programming of Viñetas dende o Atlántico, Día da Ilustración Galega, and Coruña Gráfica, as well as the self-publication of the comic El gato Lunar in 2016. A natural storyteller—something that permeates her work—she will soon see the release of an animated short film based on the story and paintings from one of her earliest exhibitions, Cándida Foresta, currently in production by the animation studio Antaruxa S.L.
