about Iyán Castaño

Oviedo, 1996

Iyán Castaño (Oviedo, 1996) is a visual artist specializing in printmaking from the School of Arts of Oviedo and a Fine Arts graduate from the University of Bilbao.

"Marca de agua" (Watermark) is the continuation of the Sand Ripples project, on which he has been working for three years and with which he won the Asturias Joven Prize for Visual Arts.

Iyán is fascinated by the sea and its ever-changing plasticity, using the beach itself as his studio. As the artist explains, his works are unique because each piece is created under different meteorological and maritime conditions.

“This project depends on the tidal cycles; I can only work during low tide, which gives me a six-hour window to work against the clock. During that time, I locate, examine, and intervene. When the water reaches my position, I have to stop, pack everything up, and leave. During high tide, these formations dissolve into the depths, making way for entirely new ones with the same structure, which will reappear with the next low tide.”

These groundbreaking and innovative creations emerge from experimental graphic art, blending printmaking with painting. They also involve explorations in experimental printmaking and its vast possibilities.
